Stages of Gujarat Public Service Commission Examination

Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) has divided the exam into 3 parts - Prelims, Mains, and the Interview.

Preliminary Examination

In Prelims, there are 2 papers (General Studies 1 and 2). Also, each paper is of 2 hours and carries 200 marks. Moreover, the questions are Multiple Choice. And the question paper will be in English or Gujarati. The syllabus is similar to that of UPSC but matters relating to Gujarat are taken into account for the GPSC exam.

GPSC mains exam is a descriptive type examination. It consists of 6 papers and each paper is of 3 hours. The mains exam is a total of 900 marks and each paper carries 150 marks.

Mains Syllabus:

Paper - 1: Gujarati


Paper - 2: English

  • Essay- You can choose any topic from a list of five. The word limit is 250-300 words.
  • Letter Writing- It is a formal letter which is about issues of daily office matters/office problems, etc.
  • Press Release- It should be on an issue of recent concerns/problems/disasters, etc.
  • Report Writing- The report should be on official function/events/field trips/surveys, etc. The word limit is 150 words.
  • Writing on Visual Information- The report is on graph/image/flow chart/table of comparison, etc. The word limit is 150 words.
  • Formal Speech- It can be about educational seminars, formal ceremonies, etc.
  • Precis Writing- It should be in about 100 words for a 300-word passage.
  • Reading Comprehension- It should be in about 100 words for a 300-word passage.
  • English Grammar- It is in the form of MCQs to choose from.
  • Translation- Candidates have to translate a short passage from Gujarati to English.

Interview Stage:

GPSC Mock Interview

The Interview is of 100 marks. It is a viva question series where the board members ask questions related to current affairs and education. Also, this stage is much more than bookish knowledge. It tests your awareness and presence of mind to respond to questions that you do not know the answer to.

Eligibility Criteria – Important for GPSC preparation

You have to fulfill certain criteria in order to sit for the GPSC exam and they are as follows -

Educational Qualification

  • The candidates must be a graduate with 55% marks.
  • Basic knowledge of computer Application.
  • Adequate knowledge of Gujarati, and English.

Age Limit

  • The minimum age for the Gujarat state services exam is 20 and the maximum age is 35 years old. However, there is a relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, the relaxation is 10 years for reserved female candidates, and 5 years for unreserved female candidates, subject to the maximum age of 45 years.

How to Prepare for Gujarat Public Service Commission

For Prelims:

  • You have to focus on the basics for the GPSC Prelims. So, read the syllabus thoroughly. Then, go through the Previous Year Question papers and understand what the exam demands. The syllabus and Questions papers will help you to decide what to study and what to omit.
  • Newspaper - Read the newspaper daily. Follow what the Centre, as well as the state, is doing for the people. You also have to pay attention to facts and famous personalities from Gujarat.
  • Standard Reference Books- These are well known and analysed by our faculty team and form the basis of your exam preparation. You have to read these books from basics properly to understand the advanced level of these books. If you have read these books before, a speed reading will also do. Do not skip these under any circumstances.
  • Read fewer books -Prepare a proper booklist for your preparation. Do not read every book that is available for a particular subject. Pick the best ones and revise those books again and again. Although you can supplement those reading. Follow the principle of Read minimum and Revise Maximum!
  • Notes - Keep your notes very short and precise. As you finish one chapter or topic, prepare notes. It will take you a long way till the final day of your exams.
  • Revision is the key- Revise as much as you can. Also, practice answer writing from the first day itself. You will be way ahead in the competition.
  • Mock Tests -Appear for multiple mock tests to polish your knowledge. Regular mock tests will train your brain to get prepared for the final day. The Prelims stage is the first most important stage because it will help you move into the Mains stage. So, keep practicing by appearing for mock tests. Further, mock tests will train you to acquire the technique of answering by elimination method as well.

For Mains:

  • Newspaper - For Mains too, read the newspaper daily. Read about government policies, and also international affairs. You have to pay attention to facts about Gujarat as well.
  • Standard Reference Books-Read these books to form a strong background of the subjects.
  • Government Websites - Supplement your studies with material from government websites like Policy Research Studies, Yojana, UPSC, etc. The material on these websites is 100% correct.
  • Keep a limited booklist - Prepare a proper booklist for your preparation. Do not read every book that is available for a particular subject. Pick the best ones and revise those books again and again. Although you can supplement those reading.
  • Notes - Prepare comprehensive notes. It means that you must prepare Prelims and Mains notes together. This will help you to prepare for both the stages from an early stage.
  • Mock tests - Practice lots of answer writing. You will be able to develop speed and answer writing skills.
  • Revision is the key - The inevitable step is revision. Revise as much as you can. You will be way ahead in the competition.

For Interview:
