The Full form of IRS is Indian Revenue Service also called as the administrative revenue service of the Government of India. IRS is one of the Group A services of central civil services. It functions under the Department of Revenue in the Union Ministry of Finance. IRS officers are recruited through the civil services examination conducted by the UPSC. This exam consists of 3 stages i.e. prelims, mains and interview.On entering the service, IRS officers are mainly trained at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) at Nagpur. There is a Foundation Course for four months post which the officers receive extensive training for sixteen months in specially designed modules on taxation and allied laws, accounting, public finances, fiscal policy, office procedures and so on. During the training, they are also sent to various field offices and organisations across India. They are also sent abroad to give global exposure to the best taxation practices worldwide.
IRS officers are primarily responsible for collecting and administering direct and indirect taxes accruing to the government of India. The duties of an IRS officer includes among others, formulation of taxation policies, handling policy matters in respect of investigation of tax evasion, updating, resolving and maintaining the relevant laws, administering the direct tax policy through its field offices across the country, and administering all the associated administrative functions pertaining to direct and indirect taxes.
IRS officer also negotiate treaties on behalf of the Indian Government in fiscal matters in both bilateral or multilateral forums such as OECD and Global form on Transparency in Tax Matters.

The candidate should be a graduate or have a degree equivalent to a bachelor's degree from any of the recognized Universities.
The minimum age is 21 years but the maximum is 32 years as per the norms. For SC/ST candidates, the age relaxation is up to 37 years of age. For OBC, it is up to 35 years of age. Similarly, the age limit is different for residents from J&K, Defence candidates, and physically handicapped candidates

The IRS exam is divided into 3 parts - Prelims, Mains and Interview.
The prelims consist of 2 papers. Both papers carry 200 marks and are of 2 hours each. However, blind candidates get an extra 20 minutes for each paper. Both the papers are objective in nature with multiple choice questions. Also, the language of the paper is Hindi and English.
The candidates who crack Prelims sits for the Mains examination which consists of a total of 1750 marks. The final list of selected candidates is created on the sum basis of interview and mains marks. There are a total of 9 papers in the mains exam. Paper A and B is of 300 marks and qualifying in nature while the rest of papers carry 250 marks. Following are the papers in the mains -

The last and final stage is the Interview and it consists of 275 marks. Candidates who clear the mains examination are called for the interview stage. Board members try to judge the personality and suitability of the candidates for the job. Interview stage is much more than testing the bookish knowledge of the candidates. Candidates should work on their personality, awareness about current events, questions related to hobbies/interests, educational background and work experience. Board members may also ask questions related to the optional subject therefore it should be prepared thoroughly. Group Discussion is also advised for Personality Test preparation. Candidates are advised to sit for several mock interviews to get enough practice. Also if you don't already know, the candidates selected for the Interview are twice as compared to the number of vacancies. Therefore, the candidate is selected on the basis of presence of mind and smart answers. The other factors that affect the selection are judgement capability, patience, awareness, morals and much more. The Interview panel will test the personality of the candidate and not merely knowledge. These are all tested in the first two rounds.
