ABOUT SMRITI MISHRA:

Smriti Mishra secured the 4th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2022. She hails from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and cleared the exam in her third attempt. Her journey to success was not straightforward, as she faced setbacks in her first two attempts, including failing the CSAT in 2021. Smriti’s determination to join the civil services was deeply inspired by her father’s commitment to public service as a CO in Bareilly. She nurtured her academic excellence throughout her schooling and pursued a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) from Miranda House, Delhi University. Her optional subject was Zoology, aligning with her background in science.

Struggles & Challenges

  • Smriti Mishra's journey to clinching the 4th position in the UPSC was marked by considerable challenges and hurdles.
  • She failed to clear even the preliminary stage of the exam in her first two attempts, with her second attempt being hindered by her inability to clear the CSAT paper.
  • However, she did not let these failures deter her. Instead, she took these setbacks as learning experiences, refined her strategy, and worked even harder to clear the exam on her third attempt.
  • Smriti also faced the pressures of high expectations from her family and society, but she remained focused and determined throughout her preparation.

Preparation Strategy

For Prelims:

Smriti focused on strengthening her conceptual clarity in core subjects like History, Polity, Geography, and Environment.
Alongside standard UPSC study materials, Smriti also referred to NCERT books to solidify her foundational knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of subjects.
She emphasized the importance of multiple revisions and solving previous years’ question papers. Her failure in CSAT during her second attempt pushed her to devote extra time to quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning in preparation for the Prelims.


For Mains:

Her approach to the Mains was structured around writing practice.
Smriti stressed the importance of practicing answer writing right from the early stages, even prior to clearing the Preliminary examination. She dedicated time to honing her writing skills through regular practice, solving previous year’s question papers. She diligently prepared concise notes for General Studies papers and relied heavily on previous years' questions to understand the pattern. Zoology, her optional subject, was one of her strengths, and she prepared it thoroughly by revising key concepts and writing model answers.
Keeping abreast of current affairs was a vital aspect of Smriti’s preparation. She integrated her knowledge of current events into her answers. Additionally, Smriti highlighted the value of creating her own notes, which served as a valuable resource for retention and revision.


For Interview:

During the interview preparation, Smriti worked on improving her communication skills and staying updated with current affairs, particularly topics related to her hometown of Prayagraj, like the Kumbh Mela. She was asked several questions about crowd management during the Mela, which she answered with confidence, drawing from her knowledge of local governance and law.
