Ottoman Empire

The influence of the Enlightenment began to reach the Ottoman Empire in the 1830s, continuing into the late 19th century. This period of transformation is best known as the Tanzimat, which started with the Gülhane Hatt-ı erif in 1839 and culminated with the First Constitutional Era in 1876. During this time, the empire underwent significant reforms aimed at modernizing its political, social, and legal structures.

One of the key figures in this reform movement was Namik Kemal, a political activist and a member of the Young Ottomans. Drawing inspiration from major Enlightenment thinkers, as well as other intellectual sources, Kemal worked tirelessly toward social and political reform. His efforts were part of a broader movement that sought to balance traditional Ottoman values with the modern ideas of liberty, equality, and constitutional governance.
